Have you become more self-conscious about your teeth over the years? They might’ve been crooked since you were younger, or they started to shift more as you got older, but braces are a great way to correct them. You might be excited to start your orthodontic journey toward a balanced smile, but there are a few things you should know beforehand. Here are three to help you feel more confident choosing them.
1.) Your Braces Treatment May Be Longer on Average
If you compare an adult’s braces treatments to a teen’s, then you might notice that younger patients often have a shorter timeline. That’s because their jawbones are not fully developed yet, so it’s easier to move their teeth into their desired positions. Your jaw is already formed and has a higher density, so it may take longer, with the average being anywhere between 14 and 26 months.
There is a large range because it may be longer or shorter, depending on what orthodontic issues are being corrected. While you won’t get your results right away, it will be a smooth process and wait to your confident grin.
2.) Braces Aren’t the Only Option You Have
Dentistry has evolved over the years, and braces have only benefited from this! The wires and brackets used are much smaller than before, meaning you’ll have a more comfortable treatment with them. However, other types of orthodontics have also come to fruition!
Clear aligners are a metal-free alternative to consider, as they use plastic trays to shift your teeth as well. They aren’t right for every type of misalignment, though, so you can talk to your provider about which would be best for you.
3.) Your Results Aren’t Just About Appearance
In the end, having a straighter smile can do more than help it look good! Many people often feel more confident about showing off their teeth. They may feel better about laughing and talking in groups, helping build stronger relationships in their work, love, and social life.
You will also have an easier time taking care of your oral health. The crookedness you had might’ve created spots you had trouble effectively cleaning. With the surfaces of your teeth exposed, you can better brush and floss them. It’s also possible you reduce any subconscious grinding or jaw soreness as well!
Keep the three points above in mind while you start braces. That way, you feel your best about your treatment toward a healthier bite.
