Loose teeth are a normal and even exciting occurrence for kids, but as an adult, that feeling of looseness can be alarming! You may be especially concerned if you recently started orthodontic treatment, and now your teeth feel a bit wiggly. Why is that happening? Are loose teeth with braces normal, or should you be concerned? This blog post shares what you should know.

Why Do Loose Teeth Occur with Braces?

When you begin wearing braces, your teeth start to move gradually into new positions. This movement is made possible by the pressure applied through your orthodontic appliances. The process triggers changes in the tissues surrounding your teeth. Bone reshapes itself to allow your teeth to shift into alignment, which is a natural part of orthodontic treatment. Plus, the ligaments that hold your teeth in place may stretch more than usual.

As this process occurs, it is normal for the teeth to feel looser than they used to. This sensation is usually nothing to worry about. In fact, it is a sign that your treatment is working properly!

The looseness will not be permanent; braces rely on your body’s ability to adapt and heal. Your teeth should eventually stabilize as they reach their new positions and your jawbone finishes remodeling around them.

How Loose Is Too Loose?

Although some looseness is to be expected, you should pay attention to certain warning signs. If your teeth feel excessively loose or you notice discomfort that persists beyond a few days after an adjustment to your braces, it may be time to reach out to your care team. Swelling, bleeding, or a tooth that feels unstable in a way that affects chewing or speaking could indicate a problem. For example, you may have an injury or infection that needs to be addressed.

Your dentist or orthodontist can evaluate the situation and provide the proper care. With the right attention, many cases of loose teeth are successfully resolved without tooth loss or other serious consequences.

Loose teeth with braces are normal and usually not a cause for concern! However, you should still monitor your mouth and reach out to your provider if you have questions or worries.
